Trams played a major part in St.Petersburg transportation history. They were the first mass public transportation in the beginning of XX century, were used as heavy load carriers for factories, for long period were the main public transportation. St.Petersburg used to have the widest tram railtrack system in Europe. But recently with the rapid increase of cars numbers, tram system is seen as a threat to street traffic and is dismounted or moved to outskirts of the city
